Relax Away Stress What with the uncertainty in the world, the economy suffering and the loss of jobs, people are experiencing a greater sense of stress at this time. Stress creates anxiety, fear, tension, depression, and a host of other ills. Finding an effective way to deal with stress is becoming a priority for many people. An individual may not be able to do anything about the state of the world, but he or she can improve their own corner of it, so that they can move through these trying times much easier. A very effective way of reducing stress and its effects is to set aside time each day to perform progressive relaxation. This counteracts the negative effects of stress. By isolating each muscle group, first tensing it, then relaxing, a person is able to release stored up tension. Doing this several times a day keeps the tension from escalating until the back, neck and jaws ache. As a person relaxes the body, it gives the message to the mind that it is safe. A feedback loop develops that actually allows the anxiety level to drop. This permits the mind and body to recharge and regenerate. When a person is more relaxed, mentally and physically, problem-solving abilities are enhanced, thoughts are clearer, memory improves, and efficiency increases.
