Welcome

I've been swamped with matters related to my mother's transition and her estate, while also getting back into the swing of my practice and classes. I'm just putting one foot in front of the other to get things done. It seems to be taking longer to pick up the pieces of my life than I thought it would take. One of those pieces is answering emails in a timely fashion. I apologize to anyone who has written to me who hasn't received an answer yet. I haven't forgotten you. I seem to have only so much mental energy, and when that's gone, I can't do anymore. I know this will pass, but I've learned not to push it. I am beginning to attend to my needs by walking, and doing other things to take care of myself. I am so grateful to everyone who sent me emails of support and concern. They have been greatly appreciated!

"How Is Life Treating You?"

by
Linda-Ann Stewart

I used to judge myself unmercifully. I wasn't doing enough writing, wasn't compassionate enough, exercising enough, etc. It didn't matter what it was, I wasn't doing it right or enough of it. A couple of my friends would also criticize me, which just confirmed my opinions of myself and caused me to feel even more inadequate. Finally, I realized that they were just echoing the voice in my head, and the more power I gave to it, the more I gave to them.

Interestingly, life treats us the way we treat ourselves. I beat myself up mentally, so I attracted people who did the same to me. Because I didn't put a stop to their critical comments, I was giving them permission to treat me in a disparaging way.

Our subconscious mind always follows our lead, and the Universe always supports us in our goals. It doesn't matter that the goals may not be what we'd consciously choose. The subconscious will present us with what the tendency of our thoughts might be. If we aren't treating ourselves with respect, kindness, and worth, then the subconscious will figure that's how we expect the world to treat us. The Universe then fills that pattern with the energy that is equivalent to what we're expressing.

If we don't stand up for ourselves, then we're instructing the subconscious mind to allow us to be victimized by bullies. People use us as the proverbial doormat, wiping their feet on us. On the other end of the spectrum, the folks who are too aggressive or drive themselves unmercifully attract much more conflict. Discord shows up not only in their relationships, but also in their everyday activities. When they push too hard, life pushes back and gives them ever-increasing difficulties.

There's an old saying, "If you have something that needs to get done, give it to the busiest person you know." The person who has a lot to do, and doesn't take time for themselves, will have even more tasks dumped on them. The subconscious follows the general trend of a person's thoughts. Even if they want more time off, if they don't make an effort to carve it out for themselves, the subconscious won't help them. When a person doesn't value themselves enough to set positive priorities and take action on them, the subconscious doesn't believe their desires have any importance, either.

Although I still have a very strong inner critic, now I stand up to it and disagree with it. Since I started doing that, life began to flow more smoothly for me. I then stood up to the negative people in my life and they either changed or moved out of my orbit. Notice how your life is treating you. How much of the discord in your life are you creating by the way you're treating yourself?

Affirmation

The Universe always supports me and wants the best for me. I recognize my true value to the Universe. I am worthy of all the best that Life has to offer. I now treat myself with respect, value, and kindness, and treat others the same. Taking the actions necessary to show my subconscious mind that I believe this, my subconscious and the Universe respond accordingly. I have the courage and insight to stand up to and for myself and my well being.

Question And Answer

Question: How do I get into a deeper state of meditation or self-hypnosis?

Answer: I suggest that you use the deepening technique from my Steps for Self-Hypnosis to help you go deeper. Essentially, it's a combination of imagery and a suggestion. You imagine going down steps, an elevator, an escalator, a tunnel, or whatever suits you, and count down from 10 to 1, telling yourself, "I'm going deeper and deeper." You could count down from 10 to 1 twice, or start from 20 and count down to 1. The imagery, along with the suggestion, helps to access deeper levels of the subconscious mind. When I meditate and use the countdown technique, I go deeper into the meditative state than I would without it.

What you are doing is training yourself. Each time you practice, you're going deeper. My clients may be very aware of my voice the first time they see me. But by practicing with the tape of their session, within a couple of weeks, many of them generally go so deep that they're don't hear the session, but come out at the end of it when I suggest that they do.

"Recreating Your Self: Building Self-Esteem Through Imagery and Self-Hypnosis"
by Nancy J. Napier

Most of my clients struggle with self-esteem issues. They have feelings of shame, worthlessness, and due to old programming, don't take the steps necessary to support their own health and well-being. This book is a great resource to anyone who has experienced these challenges.

The author addresses the subjects of healing the inner child, reviewing past abuses in the light of our current understanding, connecting with our healed, future self and much more. Especially helpful to me was the chapter on the protective parts. These parts were created to help us in a time of stress. Based on the old information, they continue to control us, and many times this actually hurts our desire to heal. However, we can update their protection and turn them into resources that support us in the present day.

Instructions, exercises and scripts for self-hypnosis accompany each of her chapters to do the inner work and heal. This book is a wonderful addition to anyone who has read John Bradshaw's books on healing the inner child, or who has had a dysfunctional childhood and wishes to resolve the old wounds to become a happier person.
